Foreign Minister Didier Reynders is demanding
more exchange of information on the use of chemical weapons in Syria. For the
United States, Great Britain, and France the case is made that chemical weapons
are being used in Syria, but until he receives proof Reynders is being “much
more cautious.”
Reynders is refusing to now already conclude
that Bashir al-Asad’s regime has already used chemical weapons. He referred to
the discussion surrounding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. “The chemical
weapons argument must not be used as a justification for supplying arms to the
Syrian rebels,” he says. The minister wants verification by the United Nations.
Washington, London, and Paris say that they
possess proof that Al-Asad has used chemical weapons. For these three countries
this information is an argument to give more express support to the Syrian
rebels.
The United Nations is not convinced, however. A
UN commission of inquiry recently said it had good reason to accept that
chemical weapons are being used, but according to Chairman Paulo Pinheiro it is
not at this point possible to state with certainty who used them.
